About the Book

Jack McCormack, a dying World War II veteran, reminisces about a love affair he had with a young Parisian woman in 1945. He re-reads her letters and regrets never having married her. His granddaughter, Marly, shares his fascination with France, and, during a study-abroad stay in Paris, meets and falls in love with a young student at the Sorbonne. After her grandfather's death, her mother sends her the letters he had been reading. These love letters reveal a side of her grandfather she never suspected.

About the Author

I have been a student of French and of the Francophone world for more than fifty years. I received my doctoral degree in France from the Université de Strasbourg in 1972. I and my family spent eleven years living and working in France. From 1979 until 2007 I was a professor of French at Converse College in Spartanburg, SC. I retired in 2007. I have been involved in literature, primarily French literature, for a very long time. And when old French letters written during World War II came into my hands, I felt I had to turn the story they told into a novel. Though the novel is primarily a fictional work, it is based upon those letters. Since retirement my wife and I have travelled a great deal. We will continue to do so, since we both love exploring the world around us.
