With their imaginations working overtime, readers salivated at the thought of what must have happened during the flight but had they been sitting on the wing, peering through the window, they would have been disappointed by the sobriety and decorum of passengers who were merely giving a new meaning to the term - traveling light. Hollywood has never been slow to exploit the commercial appeal of the word which invariably had little to do with the story line, but NAKED always looked on the marquee. Who knows what fans expected when they bought tickets at the box office to see THE NAKED JUNGLE, THE NAKED CITY, THE NAKED LUNCH, THE NAKED GUN, THE NAKED AND THE DEAD, and THE NAKED TEMPTATION. Even good old James Stewart, who would never cuss or take his shirt off in front of a lady, was the proud owner of THE NAKED SPUR. Cornel Wilde, wearing only a loin cloth, was chased across Africa by a bunch of spear waving 'natives' in THE NAKED PREY, an aptly titled film, as had this popular actor starred in THE NUDE PREY his career would have been short lived and the movie would have surely tanked after a few weeks in the art houses of San Francisco. With a little license, the British comedy, THE CALENDAR GIRLS, tells the true story of a group of middle aged women, living in a small rural town in Yorkshire, who rejected country scenes, babies church spires, and cuddly cats and dogs as subjects for the annual calendar produced by the local branch of the Womens Institute. With an eye on accelerating sales, they conspired to pose naked as long as sensitive areas were obscured by flowerpots, cakes with candles, easels, wheelbarrow handles, coffee table books and large straw hats. The lady selected for September, at first, flatly refused to take part saying - No, no, never in a million years. I couldn't possibly pose naked at my time of life - but the driving force behind this wildly successful project reassured her by saying - Don't give it another thought - you won't be naked, my dear, you will be nude. With that, the problem went away....... .

Richard Langdon Cook, born and raised in London, England, has lived in Canada, Japan, South Africa and traveled worldwide. Now retired and residing with his wife in Sarasota, Florida, he is an avid viewer of the Weather Channel and enjoys playing golf, cooking, tending his avocado trees and traveling.
