About the Book

Mostly Sand and Gravel: Artifact Adventures on the High Plains is an anthology of stories about artifact hunting on the high plains of eastern Colorado, western Nebraska and Kansas. While the pursuit of ancient rock treasures is the backdrop for this collection of essays, the author’s main purpose in writing is often to speak of shared moments with friends and family, exploration of nature’s wild places, and connections and reflections—connections to those first men and women who walked upon this land at the very alpha of our prehistory, and reflections upon the human struggles and challenges we still face at the dawn of this new millennium. Several of these articles have been previously published in Indian Artifact Magazine or Prehistoric American Magazine. The author is well known in the artifact collecting world, both for his ability to spin an interesting tale and because of his family’s extensive collection of artifacts that they themselves have found while floating rivers or hiking the prairie. Throughout the book the author reveals many of his personal “secrets” for successful hunting and the thoughtful reader should gain important information and knowledge to enhance his/her own artifact collecting adventures.
