About the Author
Laurie Burras has always loved words and trees. She grew up in an old house in Mount Holly, NJ, between Buttonwood Run and the Rancocas Creek. Memorable trees included a white pine more than 100 feet tall that could be seen from any point in the town, a very old ash with a trunk more than 5 feet wide, and a black walnut that dropped its explosive fruits on a corrugated iron roof. A willow near the Run had ten trunks that hid reflections, shadows, and children.
She lived most of her adult life in Washington, D.C., where she worked as an editor of an internationally circulated academic journal and a computer systems contractor for the Department of State. She now lives in Philadelphia, a place of many trees, and the historic center of botany in the United States.
