Turkey's inability to unite its eastern and western parts is attributed to the dominance of an oligarchy of feudal lords, tribal chiefs, big business, and a ruling class who all masquerade as if they are part of a functioning democracy. About the Author

Sedat Sami, professor emeritus of Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, is the author of numerous scientific and engineering articles and co-author of a two-volume book: Engineering Mechanics/Statics & Dynamics. He lives in southern Illinois and visits Turkey regularly.
