About the Book
China and the Asia-Pacific Region deals with China's geostrategic relations with Asia-Pacific countries with special reference to its twenty-first century naval strategy in the region. The book concentrates especially on China's apparent intention to expand its maritime influence to the Western Pacific and the Indian Ocean by putting pressure on the security of regional SLOCs. After the end of the Cold War, China wants to become a peer competitor against the US hegemonic sea power status in the world's oceans. China's naval challenge eventually invite responses of the United States and regional maritime countries.
About the Author
Dr. Lee Jae-hyung retired from the Korean Army as a Colonel in 1997. He was graduated from Korea Military Academy in 1970, and received Master of Public Administration in Seoul National University in 1980. He also studied ORSA in Ft. Virginia in 1984, and military strategy in Indian National Defense College in 1988. After the retirement, he went to Australia to study, and received his Ph.D. degree in International Politics in the University of Adelaide in August 2002. He is a lecturer in Sungshin Women's University in Seoul.
