About the Book

When Portia Bates is made redundant from the college she loves, she swears revenge. Soon she is diverting money from the English Department to set up a brothel and plotting the blackmail of prominent politicians. Even the cunning Portia, however, hasn’t reckoned on the students’ ability to create enough mayhem to ruin her plans—especially when they discover a wartime arms cache beneath the college. Readers of this black satire on English education in the tradition of Tom Sharpe will never look at jacuzzis in the same way again.

About the Author

Douglas Maddon was born in Ireland and educated at the Belfast Royal Academy and Merton College, Oxford. A former journalist, he has been a college lecturer since 1993. In an ideal world, he would be living in an attractive Tudor manor house in Sussex with his beautiful, accomplished wife, their three talented children and their Labrador, Disraeli. Sadly, as this is not an ideal world, he lives alone with his large collection of whisky and a dwindling supply of Prozac. Douglas Maddon enjoys the theatre and pottering about in public houses.

The English Department’s Whores is his first novel.
