About the Book

Most soldier stories of the 19th century concentrated on battles, campaigns, and life in uniform.

Gleanings of Mackinac is an account that gives a candid look into daily soldiering through the eyes of a private with the 23rd United States Infantry at Fort Mackinac. This soldier's "gleanings" include descriptions of the men and their duties; visitors to Mackinac Island; baseball and rifle teams; the ladies of the Mission House; a visit to the Grand Hotel; views from Fort Holmes; rock skipping at British Landing; card games; poetry; evenings at the pub; a joke; and a small child being chased by a love-sick fool. Entertaining and informative, this account taps into the heart and carries it through the life of one man and his inner battles with a ticking clock.

Gleanings of Mackinac is a true story based on actual events.
