About the Book

This collection of five stories and three novellas evokes the range of physicians’ emotions, from the intern’s elation and bewilderment to the bitterness of the semi-retired. It defines the strains on love, marriage and parenthood. It explores the compromises of doctors struggling to retain professionalism and humanity.

About the Author

Currently a teacher, researcher, and cancer surgeon at Chicago’s Cook County Hospital, Dr. Massad trained at Duke University and Albany Medical Center, where several of his stories are set. His fiction and essays have appeared in JAMA and Discover as well as in literary magazines.
