About the Book

IN THE MIDST OF DARKNESS An edge of your seat must-read! Turn off the phone, pour a cup of tea, cozy up by the fire and prepare for the read of your life! A treasure-trove of imagery and realism, this beautifully written fast paced historical fiction-adventure skillfully draws you into the lives of four remarkable people captured in the throes of Irish revolution; Seamus O'Dowd an Irish Catholic hedgerow schoolmaster, his best friend, Donald Campbell, a Scottish Presbyterian immigrant, and cousins, Reanna and Siobhan O'Neal. ULSTER--1753. Penal Laws are in full force; Irish Catholics are its targets. Pronounced outlaws by the English, their priests and teachers are hunted down and executed. Marriage between Catholics and Protestants is forbidden. To water down the rebellious Catholic population, their money and property is confiscated and their land is given to Scottish Presbyterian immigrants. Walk alongside Seamus, Donald, Reanna and Siobhan, from the early days of the "troubles" through the dramatic conclusion when French forces land on Ireland's northwest coast on August 22nd, 1798. Witness first hand their struggle to survive in the midst of darkness that was Northern Ireland a scant two centuries ago.

About the Author

Colleen Rice was born in Ottawa, Canada. Her combined heritage of Irish Catholic and English Anglican presented her with a unique challenge--researching two conflicting accounts of the same event. Her characters took up the challenge and expressed their own truths on the page. Now, thirteen years later, she presents her readers with this literary gift from the heart.
