About the Book

This book represents a unique perspective—the history of Pierre Falcon and the Metis people from the 1800s as reconstructed by Falcon's great great grandson, Louis Ritchotte.

Mr. Falcon's story is one of a man who lived and fought for the dignity and rights of the Metis, whose mixed Indian—European heritage often kept them from being accepted in either culture. He relates the family history and, thus, tells part of the story of the Metis in the Red River Settlement region in Manitoba, Canada, and North Dakota.

About the Author

Louis Ritchotte was born on the Turtle Mountain Reservation in northern North Dakota about 1942. He went to schools there and, at ages 6 and 7, attended a boarding school in South Dakota. Eventually he went to California to learn the welding trade, and for the next 40 years, Mr. Ritchotte worked as a welder in California and North Dakota. While working his trade in California, he took a humanities course at a junior college, which led to him studying his family's history and the writing of this book.
