About the Book
This book is intended for a reader interested in poetry or generally in the structure of poetry. Its subject is prosody, the arrangements of rhythm and rhyme that are a poet's tools. The book can be of practical use since it is fairly comprehensive. It covers metric feet, metric lines, metric stanzas, it gives attention to sound, tempo and texture, addresses sonnets and French Forms and even goes as far as syllabic verse. However, it is not a textbook. It is an informal introduction to a formal subject with illustrative light verse throughout. For instance, here is the two-line rhyming heroic stanza in iambic pentameter:
A couplet, just two lines, can speak with the vigor.
Quite often of stanzas much much much much bigger.
The book is intended, not to intimidate, but to elucidate and delight.
