About the Book

We were probably the most despised members of the armed forces, but our assignment had never been a matter of choice, and we did not, in the beginning, have any clue as to why we should be so disliked. In due time, all this would become clear. Our job was furnishing the "warm bodies" to the infantry companies as replacements for those who had died or been seriously wounded. We were in the supply business, handling the "cannon fodder" of war.

From England and Northern Ireland to the shore of Normandy, through France, Belgium, and into Germany, author Russell Spooner learned about the sorrows and inhumanity of war. A replacement company armorer, he endured the disdain of some fellow soldiers, the friendship of others, and the nearly unbearable conditions in the field. He endured. At the end, he could take satisfaction in the fact that no man left his company for the front line without a proper weapon or adequate ammunition.

Through it all, he persevered in the face of every obstacle. Seeking Signs of Sanity is rich with his experiences, both good and bad. His amazing story showcases true courage and strength in the ugly face of war.
