About the Book

Maria is twelve years old and on her first trip away from her home state of New Hampshire. Her family feels it's time she learns about her Acadian roots and she has come to northern New Brunswick to stay with her cousin Guy, and his family.

Among the odd things here is a mysterious Aunt Jeannette. Guy promises to uncover the secret of this mysterious woman. He claims she is the only Acadian psychic, able to see both the past and the future.

Maria is plunged into a world she never knew existed. She learns how their ancestors were torn from their land and how a brave girl, just like herself, helps her people against their enemies by becoming a spy in the enemy leader's household. Helped by Indian friends, especially the tribe shaman and a wonderful spirit wolf, Marie defeats the evil Mr. Hill and escapes with her brother to build a new life.

About the Author

Born in New Brunswick before the Second World War, Ruth Troughton grew up on a farm in Carleton County close to the Maine border. After graduating from high school at Debec, New Brunswick she attended Teachers College in Fredericton. One year in a one-room country school was followed by a teaching position with the Department of National Defence, Oromocto, New Brunswick. From there, after several years, she went to France for year, still with the Department of National Defence schools. In 1960 she married her husband, an army officer whose career took them back to Europe twice and to many parts of Canada. She now lives in St. Catharines, Ontario.

Still deeply interested in teaching, she ran a riding school for eighteen years before beginning her writing career.
