About the Book
After the death of old hermit Abner Huckabee, his deserted farmhouse becomes a playground for troublesome kids and, unbeknownst to them, a pair of cat burglars. CJ Clayton is thirteen and precocious. She loves baseball and is endlessly curious. One night, while investigating the spooky old farmhouse, she accidentally sees the dreaded criminals. When she hears voices, she hides under a sagging bed. She can only see shoes and hear the argument. One pair of shoes in particular catches her attention; they’re shiny, black, and new. The owner of these fancy shoes kills his cohort, not knowing CJ watches from under the bed. Now, she has a frightening secret that could get her in lots of trouble. With the help of her brains, her bravery, and her grumpy cat, CJ plans to catch the killer herself. However, she soon learns she’s not just playing pretend. Real lives are at stake, and, if she’s not careful, her covert investigations could catch the killer’s attention. She must play the murder game, but she soon realizes that unlike baseball, this game has no rules.
