About the Book

When Berea College is closed by a proslavery mob, Hacey Miller, a Berea professor and son of a slave owner, decides to join the Union in the fratricidal war. The action moves from Kentucky to the plots of wartime Washington, and climaxes in the nightmare battle of Fort Pillow and the slaughter of its Black garrison.

About the Author

James Sherburne is the author of more than a dozen historical novels, mysteries, and plays, many set in his beloved Kentucky. His first novel, Hacey Miller, was awarded The Friends of Literature Award in 1971. He attended Berea College and the University of Kentucky, served in the Navy during World War II, and lives in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky.
