About the Book
EL DORADO! GOLD DISCOVERED IN CALIFORNIA. The fever raced like wildfire around the entire globe. China Rose McCool saw the lawlessness, violence and prejudice of the California Mother Lode gold camps through the eyes of a child. But, orphaned at seventeen, the beautiful, strong-willed China realized that the real gold lay in the land and the courageous men and women who stayed long after the gold camps were merely a ghostly whisper from the past. Through an indominable strength and undaunted determination, she would help shape the wild, savage country she loved into the great, golden state of California. She would defy tradition to marry Esteban, a young Californio Don and would later know the love of the gentle Nick, who would make her first lady of the state. She would have fame and fortune as the legendary Rose of Sonora, but all of this would be overshadowed by her embittered son, Carlos. In her young, tragic grandson, Michael she would realize her greatest joy and deepest sorrow. Finally, in Michael's son James, she would realize her lifelong dream; the blending of the Anglo and Hispanic peoples and the final maturing of her beloved California.
