The purpose of this essay is to reconcile science and spirituality, develop a comprehensive philosophy of life, and provide a rational basis for ethics.

About the Author

Like Woody Allen, I have wondered about the meaning of life and death since I was 12 years old. My father was in the military so our family moved around a lot. Perhaps that contributed to my not getting attached to a traditional set of religious beliefs. In college I ran across Allen Watts and thought, “Aha—this makes sense.”

After college, I became a professional bureaucrat in the Federal Government, doing a job which I didn’t like very much, but which I was good at. After doing that for twenty years I had a stroke—of luck—I consider it, and retired on disability. Presently I am a person of leisure deciding, at age 52, what I want to do when I grow up.
