About the Book

The Journey takes place during the last hours of an elderly woman’s life. As she drifts in and out of consciousness, she relives a twenty-seven year search for her lost lover. Moving between past and present and crossing into the afterworld, the novel recreates in simple, lyrical prose a stunning love affair between two middle aged, married people. When David Hamilton, a fifty-one year old artist and loner spots Laura Williams, a quietly desperate forty year old wife and mother, a connection is made that will haunt them both forever. The Journey explores the boundaries of erotic love, spiritual love, maternal love, guilt, empathy and responsibility. It touches upon the struggle between sexuality, aging and illness, enlarging our understanding of the body’s hunger for continuance and connection. It reveals a passion so strong that it fuses the souls of a man and woman and carries them beyond life.

About the Author

The author is an investigative reporter who has written extensively on the problems of the disadvantaged. Her articles and books have won dozens of awards for journalism including the Columbia School of Journalism award and the Robert Kennedy award. Her most recent book, Growing Up Empty, published by Harper Collins, is the story of America’s hungry children. The Journey is her first novel.
