We Fly Away is the story of a widowed father, born in poverty shortly before the Great Depression and his six children, five daughters and one son. The book chronicles the family as they progressed through life in the rural south during the 1950's.

We Fly Away is the story of struggles, dreams, hopes and triumphs of a father's love for God, education and the American Dream that he shared with his children. The father's profound dedication and commitment to his children is found throughout the book. When he flew away on May 24, 1998, two of the daughters had already earned doctorate degrees. The son is a successful entrepreneur and government employee, while the older daughters have become successful in their own businesses in gardening, catering, courier services, and day care operations.

Alice McCullough-Garrett, a caring educator, is a middle school principal. Due to her own unique life experiences, she is an advocate for children in single parent families. Her message to them is simple, ?You are not defined by your circumstances good or bad, but by who you are.?
