About the Book
Chicago Is Calling Me Home is about a man who lives life on his own terms, and much of his life was outside the law. Ripp Erwin lived his best years in Chicago, and his worst in the United States Penitentiary at Leavenworth, Kansas. He fell in love and married Jennifer. His childhood buddies became successful bank robbers, he joined them at that before long, and he finally retired from it. He and Jennifer eventually moved to Chicago, and have a son, Tommy. They lived the life they wanted for many years in Chicago when she passed away.
He moved to Florida over the love for a young woman as an elderly man. He lost her, he could no longer afford to return to his Chicago life and he feels stuck in Florida, and can only wish to be living in Chicago. But, he is also determined not to end his life confined to a nursing home. He can only accept going down on his terms. That is being arrested at a Las Vegas blackjack table, and then being sentenced to a federal prison the remainder of his life.
Ripp returns to Leavenworth, but he is assigned to the seniors cell block. He arrives there to find that Lee Wolfe, another bank robber and murderer, is his cell mate. Tom is visiting him on the first day that he is allowed visitors, and they greet each other.
"Dad, why the hell did you do this?" Tom asks.
"This damn place beats any damn nursing home hands down," Ripp says.
