We felt that in some way, we had failed as parents. It was our job as parents to keep our child safe from sickness and injury, and we failed to keep him from autism. We also felt lost and alone, as though we were the only parents in the world going through this ordeal with their child. After a while, though, we learned how to cope with the autism and accept it for what it was. We decided that to help our son, we needed to take control of the situation the best we could rather than playing the part of the victum, letting the disorder control our lives and our son's future. Right from the start, we must take control of our children's futures. We must be their voices, speaking out and advocating for them.

Before devoting herself to a child with autism, Kathleen Mueller provided nursing care for disabled children and the elderly. A published author and winner of two Editor's Choice Awards, she spends her time with her husband and son on their farm near Portage, Wisconsin.
