About the Book

For the gypsies of Chicago’s Uptown Community in the 1970s, survival is an art form. America still reels with rampant unemployment and inflation. A climate of anti-establishment is hot, fueled by the dropout drug culture carried over with the hippies of the late 1960s. Free-spirited is the name of the game. This underclass of street people come together to form their own sub-culture—they’re the city’s traveling gypsies. Are they sometimes unsavory? Perhaps, but they’re always colorful. They are street hustlers who survive by wit and whim alone, invariably caught up in the addictive nature of a liberated lifestyle. The gypsies rollick in the after effects of the sexual revolution, surrounded by the glory days of rock and R&B. The civil rights and women’s movements lay the foundation for their beliefs, but they also believe in each other. Life on the Chicago streets is romantic but it’s also dangerous. Gypsies keep watch and form a passionate society never to be forgotten.
