Flanders Callaway, 77, spent the first 20 years of his life in Tennessee and Kentucky. After graduation from high school, he moved as a stranger to New York City where he worked at low-level clerical jobs until his retirement at 68. During his working years he attended evening college where he earned a B.A. in German language and literature. He considers Miss Cody his "pure labor of love."
