About the Book
Flow On :Ramapo High School Students Rapping Poetic is a striking depiction of the psychological, emotional and spiritual depth of teenaged students as seen through their poetry. There is hopefulness. There is tenderness. There is loving. There is even a glimmer of humor. As well, though, there is a keen accounting of those ills that too often infuse society-at-large and individuals in particular. The first poem in the anthology, A Relief, by Esther Fleurima, speaks to the cathartic power of writing. It speaks to the powerfulness of self and the freedom of self expression when writing, because "words don't judge". Perhaps, too, the reader of this collection will experience a cleansing, a relief, and even be prompted to give further examination to the subjects raised. Perhaps, too, this book's contents will serve to create a better way of being in the universe. Yes. It just may.
About the Author
A number of students signed up for the course Rapping Poetic, created and taught by Kai Adwoa-Thomas, and introduced to teenagers in the East Ramapo Central School District in 2006. The poems herein are but a small measure of the creative output and artistic ability of students attending the Rapping Poetic course and students attending Ramapo High School, in general.
