When Susan J. Humphreys moved to the Oakland area in 2000, several people invited her to attend their churches. One gentleman, however, was more persistent than others. Humphreys bluntly ended the conversation by stating that she had simply chosen a different path to follow.

But the exchange continued to nag at Humphreys long after it was finished. She wondered why she wasn't willing to talk about her beliefs and eventually realized that it was because she didn't know what those beliefs really were.

For the next six years, Humphreys clarified her ideas about the world and religion. She came to understand that she doesn't hold beliefs-she holds knowledge, or what she calls Gnosis, or "It". Others might call this enlightenment.
