Less than a year before, Sean had been an ambassador, a representative of his people to the Global Union, and the most respected celebrity in Ansenar. But now, he was little more than a vagabond, trudging from town to town, following the cryptic signposts in his dreams. Even he knew this was the very definition of obsession.
Yet, always, his journey’s end was only an uplink away. He need only touch the tiny device he kept safely hidden in a pocket of his satchel. A single word to Orion, and less than a day later, an Ozzaen transport would arrive to fetch him. It would end the wandering, but it would also mean defeat, and he would have to admit failure. That, he was not yet ready to allow.
His thoughts drifted to the friends and family he had left behind in Ansenar. He thought of beautiful Kristine; Kelvin Browne, his adopted brother; old Eliah; and even Janice Dixon, his outworlder friend from the Global Security Agency flagship Brighton, who had been recalled from her temporary post in Ansenar once her government learned of the Ozzaen plan to enter the temporal portal. Sean wondered if he would ever see her again.
Now, he rolled up his left sleeve and gripped the small green object which had called his wrist home for a year, making a fist over it and squeezing tightly as if to crush it. He removed his hand again and was not surprised to find the orandix undamaged by his feeble efforts. It merely stared back up at him, mocking him with its silence, a single green oval no larger than his thumb, mounted atop its dull brown cloth.
The pub manager took notice of the scene and leaned in over the bar, his eyes narrowed in study. “That’s quite a fine gem you have there, friend. An emerald?”
Sean fought back a laugh. “No, not an emerald. If only it were that simple.”
