In the spring there were parties almost nightly and although no one was seriously eyeing medical school, doing well academically was a true priority amongst the several-thousand student-body, especially amongst the men with the rapidly escalating draft, so the hardest drinking was saved for the weekends. The mountain Laotian Hmong tribes had been recruited to fight their ancient enemy the Vietnamese... ...armed the male warriors with rifles and grenades and then dropped desparately needed food supplies into suspected enemy positions and let them fight their way to the food. The war had taken away their farms and now it was feeding them with the currency that war used. That is how it was then in Africa: each day the same as the day before; the rhythm of life having emerged from the land as slowly as a sapling from the soil; the present indistinguishable from the past; yesterday disappearing into each of the yesterdays before it, like the repeating reflection in two mirrors growing smaller and smaller until they disappear into infinity.
