"Little Wolf's Adventure, " a middle/upper grade contemporary story that transports the reader into the world of Native American lore; illustrates the devastating affect of bullying; captivates with near-death experiences; and demonstrates the value of friendship and loyalty—with both humans and animals. Following is a brief synopsis: Three bullies bedevil Johnny Bear Child about his Blackfeet heritage. Distraught and desperate, he runs away to seek the mystical powers of a medicine dream. He receives advice, a feather, and his warrior name, Little Wolf, from his great-grandfather’s ghost. Whiterobe, Johnny’s dog, guides searchers to his master four days later. While horseback riding, Johnny and his classmate Sarah stumble upon a long-hidden cave. A legend of gold treasure lures them into it. The bullies trail Johnny and Sarah. Deep inside the cave, warrior ghosts capture the five explorers. Using sign language, Johnny tells the ghosts that his great-grandfather will take them to their last resting places. They don’t believe Johnny, and drop him into a whirlpool. Great-grandfather’s ghost rescues Johnny, then dissipates with the warrior ghosts. Johnny leads the bullies from the cave. They reconcile their behavior and gain an understanding of Johnny, thus proving the power of his medicine dream. After moving to Addison, California, thirteen-year-old Johnny Bear Child encounters three bullies who defame his name, tribe, and traditional braids. How can he best deal with this crisis? Should he turn to the teachings of his Blackfeet heritage? Or look for a more traditional means to solve the problem? Distraught and desperate, Johnny seeks a mystical medicine dream and advice from his deceased great-grandfather to overpower the bullies. Great-grandfather gives him a special feather and advises Johnny that he must become the leader of the pack, using the wiles of the coyote. Sarah, a classmate who lives on a neighboring ranch, befriends Johnny. When Johnny and Sarah, along with Johnny’s dog, Whiterobe, embark upon exploring a cave in hopes of finding lost treasure, the unwanted intrusion of the bullies quickly becomes a matter of life or death. Will the spirit of Johnny’s great-grandfather help save him? How can Johnny put his newly achieved medicine dream to use?

Nona Burroughs Babcock grew up in South Dakota and Montana. While working for the Forest Service, she graduated from Weber State University, Ogden, Utah. Family, writing, gardening, and playing the keyboard are her passions. She and her companion, Darrel Fite, live in Clinton, Montana, with their precocious dog, Dillon.
