About the Book

In this collection of essays, stories, and poetry, author Jim Stratton focuses on the sheer beauty of nature and the human connection to the natural world. Endowed with Stratton’s own illustrations, Waist Deep in Broom Sedge celebrates the splendor that can be found in the world around us such as in water, snow, color, light, fog, and rain.

In the poetry selection, “While It Was Still Snowing,” Stratton praises the wonder of snow.

There is no beauty compared
To snow’s shadow and light;
No blues as coldly blue,
No whites as brightly white,
As when it is still snowing.
I walk through the cold wood
And embrace the pearly glow
Reflecting beneath my cap hood.

Based on personal observations and theories, the works in this compilation show that we are the caretakers of this earth and we should seek ways to live in harmony with nature. We need to open our eyes, slow down, and breathe in the wonders of the natural world as the essence of nature is within us all.

Jim Stratton was born in Hartsville, South Carolina, on Christmas Day. An artist and a writer, he enjoys spending time in the outdoors.
