About the Book

Your goal is to become a senior leader or a better one-or you are involved in selecting or assessing executives-or you are a teacher, trainer, or student of leadership. You wonder: How does leading at the top differ from leading at lower levels-and how can it best be learned or taught. Leading at the Top: Requirements for Senior Executive Effectiveness is for you! It bypasses the maze of leadership literature, focuses exclusively at the top, and identifies four required areas of competence:

• Characteristics and Qualities
• Ability to Manage Change
• Ability to Manage Crises
• Willingness to Accept Risk

The modules on each competency area provide specific ideas and operating principles supported by recent and historical examples you will recognize. "Your Turn" questions and application exercises assist individual reflection and learning. An appendix provides suggestions for teachers and trainers using the book-for seminars or for the senior leadership portion of a management or leadership course.

The book provides a comprehensive framework or lens to view the top leader's job-and the tools to do it better. It says what's required and why, and guides you to understanding and competence.

About the Author

Dr. John R. Hook honed his leadership skills in the U.S. Army, management consulting, and academia. He has held high-level command and staff positions, taught at West Point and the Army War College, and conducted hundreds of management seminars for senior leaders in industry and government. He is Professor Emeritus of Management at Mount St. Mary?s University in Maryland.
