Science-sleuths Adam and Rachel Fuller apply Rachel's photographic memory and Adam's knack for developing crime theories in pursuit of the killer. They travel to France, where Adam is nearly killed and Rachel falls in love with both Paris and a man she meets. Adam wrestles with risk taking and Rachel with dating older men. They learn more about the missing matter in the universe from internationally known experts.

Adam, a senior at Seaside High in San Diego, California, doesn't tell his parents the whole story which gets him into trouble. Once he told them he was taking his date to the movies but forgot to mention the movie was in Tijuana, Mexico, and the car broke down there. Rachel loves playing tricks on Adam, as when she hid his Playboy magazines and he couldn't tell his parents because they didn't know he had them.
