About the Book
For some time now, we have been inundated with a steady stream of books and articles detailing the problems plaguing public education. Edutopia goes beyond the criticisms to offer a comprehensive list of proposed reforms addressing the problems.
The general thrust of these proposals is to de-regulate education, removing elements of compulsion, and giving students and parents the freedom to make meaningful choices with regard to the nature of their educational experiences.
The reforms proposed in Edutopia go well beyond quick fixes and fresh coats of paint, to offer parents and students meaningful alternatives to the present system of public education in America.
About the Author
Winston Apple attended the University of Missouri at Kansas City, earning a B.A. in Secondary Education and an M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction. He has been teaching at Van Horn High School in Independence, Missouri since January of 1985. His teaching experience at Van Horn has afforded him a unique perspective, since Van Horn is part of the Kansas City, Missouri School District, an urban district that has been involved in a federal desegregation case throughout Winston's tenure. This litigation has provided the author with an active, if not always voluntary, role in implementing many of the earnest, but superficial, reform initiatives of the past twenty years.
