About the Book

Despite being hidden in convents, family friends' homes and holes-in-the-wall during Hitler's Third Reich, despite the loss of his well-to-do family's earthly goods, and despite the horror of war surrounding him, Remembering depicts a playful child, ever devising diversions to keep himself and his brothers giggling and happy through the grimmest time in human history.

Facing some of his greatest challenges in his adopted country of America, the survival skills developed in war-torn Germany serve John Schwabacher through a life of significant personal and professional challenge.

A historic memoir of recurrent resilience, Remembering hearkens back again and again to the youthful image of a 14-year-old boy bound for freedom with little more than a tattered suitcase in hand and hope in his heart.
