The Urban Refugee Camp sits in the shadow of a crystal gray city. Inside are ghosts in cast-off clothing, wrapped in stolen blankets and damp sleeping bags, human detritus left in the wake of a changing world and unseen by the city that grows with no thought of the bones beneath its cornerstones. For the almost dead, there is nowhere else to go . . . An old man and his daughter appears at the gate one evening in early October. The air is just beginning to grow its winter teeth and the homeless inside are starting to realize how flimsy their clothing really is. The old man’s voice is rich and thick and sweet, like Turkish coffee with too much raw sugar. The camp has never had a storyteller before . . .

About the Author
Gary Earl Ross, an associate professor at the University at Buffalo Educational Opportunity Center, is the award-winning author of The Wheel of Desire & Other Intimate Hauntings, the children’s tale Dots, the play Sleepwalker: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, and the forthcoming Blackbird Rising, A Novel of the American Spirit.
