If only getting a hot chick was as easy as going to a shelter and picking one out. You can’t just go to a shelter, like you do with dogs, and pick out one—especially not a Kate Upton look-alike. Rosie’s a good-looking mutt, though. Mom and Elizabeth are a little jealous of her even—the way they talk about her! “Look at those big eyes with black lining, as though she has permanent makeup on!” Elizabeth gushes. “I wish I could have liner like that.” The real irony in all of this is Johnny. When he’s not making those weird faces—like gritting his teeth, grimacing like he’s about to explode, among other contortions—he is really a good-looking guy. Handsome even. He could be mistaken for a member of one of those boy bands with his wavy, dark amber hair, perfectly straight teeth, and impish smile. Every once in a while I catch his deep brown eyes looking at me, as though he can see inside me, into my thoughts and feelings. It doesn’t happen often, so it’s kind of jarring when it does. It’s like we make a connection for a nanosecond, but it doesn’t go anywhere. “Johnny has the most soulful eyes I’ve ever seen. He’s such a beautiful boy,” this girl named Kelsey, who was in a youth group Bible study with me, once told me. “When I look into his eyes, I see Jesus.” “Really?” I looked at her with skepticism. “I wouldn’t go that far.” “Oh, sure,” she countered. “When we love the least of these, as Jesus tells us to do, we become like Him.”
