They were young and in love and called to serve the Lord. And perhaps if Ruth and Lee Truman had even suspected what lay ahead, they might have turned and fled, but thank goodness they didn’t. Or we would have missed this warm and often hilarious look at life within the goldfish bowl of the ministry.

From their very first church appointment, it became obvious what the Trumans would attract humorous and bizarre situations throughout their lives. How else can they explain the Bali dancer at the church social? Or the frozen chickens that spilled across the highway and nearly caused hypothermia? Or the church that looked like a half-buried septic tank? Or the parishioner who served coffee from her hot-water bottle?

About the Author

RUTH TRUMAN is a retired university administrator and wife of a retired United Methodist pastor. While raising four children in Methodist parsonages with her clergy spouse, she also earned a master’s degree in counseling from California State University at Los Angeles and a Ph.D. in education from the University of California in Los Angeles, receiving the latter at age 45. She is the author of Underground Manual For Ministers’ Wives and Other Bewildered Women, How To Be A Liberated Christian, and Not Of This Fold.
