About an hour later, Koywan and John met back up under the old pecan trees. This time, John had more to say as it would appear that his recent shock wore off. “Suzie Johnson!” John screamed at the top of his lungs. “How could this happen to me?” John asked Koywan. “I refused to look her dead in the eye but I know, I just know that she was staring at me the entire class long.” John continued. “To make matters worse, all of the other girls in the class were looking at me too. This meant that they knew, and I don’t even know what they knew because I don’t know.” John continued, and Koywan couldn’t get in a word. “And to make matters worse that worst.” “I received a note out of nowhere.” “What in the world am I’m going to do? By this time, Koywan’s eyes were as big as grapefruit as he tried to absorb the nightmare that John was describing to him.” “Don’t you like Suzie just a little bit?” Koywan said as he shrugged his head into his shoulder so that John couldn’t take it off. “A Lil bit is exactly how much I like Suzie.” A very little bit as he picked up an old pecan and tossed it as far as his strength would let him. “Don’t worry John, I just panicked.” “I didn’t know what to say.” “I’m sorry I just froze.” Koywan tried to explain. “Froze!” John screamed. “When things freeze they don’t move, and when people freeze, they don’t say anything.” “But, somehow you manage to tell Suzie that I've got feelings for her.” "Although, you may be right, it’s feelings of a headache and pain. John camly said as he realized Koywan’s genuine concern.

About the Book
As twelve-year-old Koywan navigates the school day, he endures a lot of stress. He’s the butt of everyone’s jokes, has only a few friends, and being chosen last on teams is a weekly event. But having to ride the bus and deal with the jokers and pranksters is the worst. He anticipates the sassy words of his worst enemy, Suzie Johnson. As if enduring his classmates’ jokes during the school hours isn’t bad enough, Suzie’s sharp words put the bitter icing on what has already been a bad day. He keeps his cool while Suzie throws insult after insult at him until she moves to the next person; few are exempt from her nastiness. Unfortunately for Koywan, his insults last longer, and he seems to be Suzie’s prime target. Koywan is frustrated by the bus driver’s lack of concern. The best part of his day is getting home and spending time with Grandma Lillian who always knows the right things to say. Although her words are old-fashioned and out of date for a twelve-year-old kid, they still mean a lot. But when Koywan needs advice from someone his age, his best friend, John, is there to help him brainstorm. And that’s what they do: concoct a plan to help Koywan get Suzie off his back, to fit in at school, and to have a chance to be normal.
About the Author
Koywan Keyes, currently a sawmill team member, earned an associate degree in general studies from the University of Mount Olive. He is also a church musician and has been playing the piano/musical keyboard for more than thirty years. Keyes has released one single. He and his wife, Veronica, have one child and live in Washington, North Carolina. This is his second book.
