In the late 40's and 50's television was just beginning and although there were many radio dramas we children still got most of our imaginative e life from books, comic books and pulp magazines. There were few organized sports as adults left children to organize their own games and choose their own amusements. We went to the woods and the lakes in groups and we asked older children to referee our games and sometimes to adjudicate our quarrels. We chose our own books and magazines. there was Dime Western, Weird Tales, Amazing Stories, Famous Fantastic Mysteries, The Flash, Superman, Captain Marvel and Planet Comics and of course the many children's books like The Lardy Boys and even the ancient Horatio Alger Junior books like Ragged Dick and Andy Grant's Pluck that were still in our family librairies. Of course we read Jack London's works and enjoyed The Sea Wolf and White Fang immensely. . . .And we even wrote our own books, slowly, painfully and very amateurishly.

About the Book
While growing up in the rural Midwest during the mid-twentieth century, Jack Blair and his friend Billy Coffin are drawn to a small walled garden behind Billy’s grandfather’s house. Sometimes they open the door to the garden and stare at the covered trellis, imagining they are glimpsing another realm into a secret world. But one day, after they are invited into the garden, Jack and Billy realize that the world behind the door holds something vital to their happiness—peace. As the boys grow older, they spend most of their time in the woods and orchards behind the garden. After they are inspired and mentored by a local artist, Jack and Billy begin painting the woods and fields while coping with a world that regards anything, especially extra animals, as weak and trivial. But when the artist suddenly dies by a falling limb, the boys are provided with a new and much deeper understanding of their community—and the fragility of life itself. A World in Yellow Leaf shares the poignant tale of two young budding artists living in rural America as they bond in a secret garden and learn about friendship, community, and themselves.
About the Author
Andrew King is professor emeritus at LSU, where he formerly held the Hopkins Chair of Communication. Other books include Postmodern Communication,Communication and Power,and Twentieth Century Roots of Rhetorical Studies (with Jim Kuypers). King, who has three children and four grandchildren, lives with his wife, Ellen, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
