When the dust settles
From the mediocrities of existence,
Among the weeds one finds a flower
Like a smile when nothing else does,
At some forgotten, neglected corner of the field
Where all things can and may exist, but do not,
Because life is a place of the untouched mysteries
Reserved for the orchid and the accidental discovery
Of a beauty that stands on its own, alone against
The wind and the storm of harsh, uncouth rebellion,
The invasive forces of earth and human nature without control
Attempting to outdo the orchid, queen of the flowers.
To hide in waiting for the king Who chooses only to look upon her beauty
As something to be admired and enjoyed, Never to be walked on unconsciously
Or to be plucked and taken away To some place she can no longer be herself.
Instead, he chooses to become a sentinel Like the trees that surround and guard her,
Not as prisoner, but respectful of her choice To grow freely in her protected environment,
Standing in naked beauty for the eyes of kings.

onto the fields of paradise
left vacant of her presence.
He looks
for her
in his heart
and sees
that she indeed
is the one thing
he needs
and wants;
a window
is flung open,
a door beckons,
the house of the soul
welcomes him
home.
he knew all till he finds
her lying
on a mattress in the arms
of the sun; familiar
her beautiful form, strange
the light she radiated –
it was his.
He found her
in a room
in the palace
of dreams;
he held her
in his soul
awaking,
a queen,
crowned
by the glory
of his deepest dreams
of the Muse,
the Beloved
of the Sun.

About the Book

Poet Ajit Sripad Rao Nalkur admires the wilderness around him, while living in southern India. About the Author
Ajit Sripad Rao Nalkur is a fulltime poet and author of Coming Home, Dream Threshold, Love’s Story, and Doors to Paradise. He lives on a beach in South India with Jaya, his wife and muse. He is a father of five, lover of nature, and his major passions are poetry and gardening.
