Hampered by water resistance, Mark attempted to run upstream but failed to make any real distance from the three men and their longer legs. His luck was finally running out.
“Come here, you little brat!” Kowalski snapped.
Abruptly, the water around Mark’s legs flowed faster than a few moments ago. He concentrated and heard a faint rumbling in the distance.
Forgetting the enforcers, he stared up the river and noticed that it was already beginning to flood out onto the sunken beaches upstream. Mark briefly smiled as he got an idea.
“What the hell’s he doing?” Kowalski muttered to Drake. “He ain’t runnin’ no more.”
“No idea.” Drake shook his head before he too looked down at the water and noticed the altered flow. “Current’s coming!”
“What?!” cried Hernsen, his face struck with horror.
Kowalski assessed the situation in a split second before barking orders. “Everyone get on the upper shore! Now, now, now! Get up there! Get the dogs up there!”
“What about me?” Mark cried, doing his best to sound frightened. Kowalski sneered coldly at Mark. “What about you? You wanted out. Enjoy.”
The enforcers and stalkers scrambled to the upper shore as Mark pretended to struggle to get himself out of the water.
He reached the shore and ran toward the enforcers, reaching out an imploring hand.
Burke and Hernsen stretched out their hands for him.
Aiming toward Hernsen, Mark halfheartedly attempted to reach the second enforcer just as the current crashed down and swept him away. None of them saw the strangely triumphant grin on Mark’s face as the current hit.
