Religious Intolerance
The number of atrocities carried out in the name of religion is another impediment to belief in a God. Unfortunately, a very small minority of people, even smaller in modern times, have placed an interpretation on the Holy Writings that makes them feel justified in their barbaric activities. However, it is quite clear that any form of violence is contrary to the Golden Rule, and anyone inflicting harm on another has no mandate whatsoever to justify such actions on religious grounds. The vast majority of followers of all religions are totally against any form of violence, and those who act contrary to their own teachings will eventually be judged for their actions.
Religion and ScienceThe perceived conflict of religion and science is another reason that many reject religion. As scientific knowledge advances, many traditional spiritual teachings are judged to be contradictory. Unable to reconcile the religious teachings with scientific discoveries, people’s tendency is often to reject the religion. Taking the aspect of human creation as an example, one could not accept both the literal story in the Bible and the scientific explanation of evolution. But if we treat the Bible story as a parable, we do not have to choose between the religious and the scientific explanations. Following the recent discovery of the Higgs boson, this particle has been referred to as the “God particle.” The notion that this discovery somehow challenges the verity of the existence of a supernatural creator is absurd. It adds no more support to the absence of a creator than any other discovery, including the discovery of the existence of the universe itself. It is the line that might be followed by atheists, but believers who accept that science and religion can coexist would not see this latest discovery as any threat to their belief. Science is discovering the tools and method by which the universe was created as per the will of the Creator. In whatever way the universe was created, there is a scientific explanation.
