Zilch
Much originates just from zilch,
And to nothing it all returns.
Sky gazers say all that they see,
Is countered by anti-matter.
It’s out there pitch dark and unseen.
When the two types meet it’ll be back
To silent nothingness for more eons.
These folks then tell us that’s just how,
It all started in the first place.
Matter and anti-matter split off,
In exact amounts in utter space,
During that super gigantic bang--
Only to disappear one day,
In a huge unfathomable poof!
And when we die we’re sure to turn
From dust to dust to anti-dust then zilch.

Review
Reviewed my life the other day;
Unwound myself, rewound my thoughts,
And relived again—fast forward,
Like silent Charlie Chaplin movie,
Pushing a cart uphill past rail tracks,
While the train steams along closer.
Charlie, playing me, nears top then slips,
And rolls down over the rail road,
Just missing the chugging engine.
I’ve repeated that pointless effort,
So many times in my life across
Risky paths that looked deceptively safe.

Ben Sheldon is the author of Poetic License; in addition, his poems have appeared in various publications and on poetry websites. His poems have also appeared in the Best Poets and Poems annual collections previously. He was interviewed and his poetry read on the Florence Henderson poetry radio show, produced in New York City. He currently lives in California.
