Caroline had lived two lives. Caroline’s first life ended on the day the bush plane crashed. That crash left Caroline a childless widow, struggling to make sense of the loss; trusting that in all this there was a purpose. Caroline’s second life started with—Him. The first she saw of Him was through the razor-wire fence surrounding the prison exercise yard as an escort of soldiers shoved and dragged him through the side entrance of Bourey Prison. The soldier bringing up the rear was clearly in charge. He looked more Russian than Burmese, sporting an imperial beard on his triumphant face. When the prisoner stumbled, the Russian pushed through the soldiers and lifted him by his shirt collar, shaking him and grinning malevolently into his face before thrusting him forward through the door. The prisoners scrutinizing the arrival returned to their conversations but Caroline pondered the presence of another foreigner behind the bars of Bourey.

About the Book
John Brock is a British spy who knows something his enemies are desperate to learn. Caroline Wells is a Canadian widow waylaid and imprisoned by the cruel military junta oppressing Burma. Bereaved yet seeking a new purpose in life, she has relied on her faith to survive her captivity so far, but her hope has been waning. Now, with Brock as a cellmate, she sees change ahead for both of them. These two people from very different worlds must now learn to trust each other enough to find a way out of prison and out of Burma, pursued all the while by soldiers, leopards, and foreign spies. What love can be forged in the jungles of Burma?
About the Author
Born to medical missionaries in rural India, D. C. Shaftoe draws upon childhood experiences to explore the plight of oppressed peoples in Southeast Asia. She now lives in the Niagara Region of Ontario, Canada, with her husband and two children.
