"The Dance"
The lights were bright, the room aglow,
She wanted so to dance.
The band played every song she knew
Still she didn't have a chance.
Her girlfriend said that she should come
If only just this time--
But this was such a bad mistake
And a ride she'd need to find.
Then suddenly before her
Stood a giant of a man--
Appalled at what he asked her,
She reached up and took his hand.
He waltzed her round the ballroom floor,
His grip was firm and tight.
Now she knew why Cinderella
Could have danced all night.
Too soon the dance was over
But he was asking for another--
As he placed her in her wheelchair
She said he needn't bother.
He vowed the pleasure would be his
And would she kindly not refuse.
So once again he carried her,
And ever since, he's been her shoes. ~

A Letter Just the Same
I’m writing to you, Uncle Harold, Though you’re one I never knew, To tell you that your love of poems Was passed to me from you.
I’m well aware you know me not, For I was very young That day the angels called your name And beckoned you to come.
Your sister Mary’s oldest girl— They often call me Lynn— For it is I who writes these words— All grown, the child you knew back then.

Lynda Harris has been writing poetry since her teens. Now the mother of three daughters and grandmother to seven, she lives with her husband in the mountains of western North Carolina.
