A player will play as he practices! Therefore, each day one member of the staff needs to appeal to the leaders to improve over the day before. If one will do his best each day to improve over the previous practice, he will one day be a champion. A different coach should make the appeal each day for maximum effort. Also B. F. Skinner taught us that a reward after practice , but not every day, may result in reinforcing a player’s maximum effort at practice. The reward must exist only now and then. Seek advice from your team physician for more data regarding rest periods and liquids.
The cognitive area is the “biggie,” but we must not forget how to teach a thinking human. We must tell them what we are going to teach them. Then we must demonstrate what is to be taught. Then teach the fundamental by repetition. Then tell them what we taught. They must practice until reaction occurs. Now to organize a practice with the above philosophy ...

About the Book
In observing today’s football coaching techniques on the high school level, I have noticed that some coaches try to follow college and even pro football coaches’ sophisticated methods such as elaborate signals, multitude of plays, etc. It seems to me that on the high school level, the “KISS” (Keep it Simple Stupid) technique should only be as sophisticated as the boys who are new to the game. Fancy signals, etc., which are confusing to say the least, just add unnecessary stress.
With this in mind, I am introducing a straightforward approach; based on sound plays, sound fundamentals, hard workouts, discipline and repetition so that each player has an automatic response under game conditions.
About the Author
Martin grew up in Oklahoma. He earned his BS from Northeastern State College, his masters from Tulsa University and his doctorate from Arkansas University. He coached high school football from 1951 to 1965 and went into administration. Upon retirement he returned to football as a volunteer coach for Ron Lancaster.
