We left in the middle of the night. The rain was falling fast and the mud was beginning to make our journey sluggish. From what mother told me, we traveled by wagon on a very desolate road to avoid coming in contact with anyone who might steal from us. California was our destination. Gold would be our prize for reaching the ocean. We left everything behind, home, family, friends, everything to have a better life. Everything would be new; a new home, country, and a new life, having just been born a few days, myself.

About the Author
Ann Ibarra, currently an art specialist, has a bachelor’s in communication arts from the University of the Incarnate Word and a bachelor’s in education from the University of Texas, San Antonio. She enjoys painting, playing the piano, and traveling and has visited countries all over the world. She is also the author of Lorena’s Rosary.
