Since the beginning of reliable and efficient space travel and discovery of unlimited mineral wealth in the Asteroid Belt, the UAR, European Union, Comtec, and Transvaal have begun mining operations in order to build their wealth and survive. Each entity has its armed forces stationed alongside its mining operations for security. To fulfill its security requirements, the UAR established a special unit within its Marine Corps called the Space Marines. As military units go, the Space Marines is a very small organization. It is small because when operating in the harshest environment known to Man, a military force equates to overhead and cuts into profits. They are like a very expensive insurance policy – each year you pay a hefty premium while hoping the policy is never needed.
The Space Marines protect the United American Republic’s space station, transport and mining ships, Moon base, and the Asteroid Belt mining operations. UAR contractors run the space station, transport and mining ships, ore processing facility, and asteroid mining operations.
Due to international treaties governing which weapons are permitted in space, combat ships and selected munitions are forbidden. Space Marines and their international counterparts are primarily equipped with small arms.

About the Book
In the far off future, the world’s natural resources have run dry, and we have been forced to rely on the moon for critical mining operations. Oreheavy asteroids from the asteroid belt are brought to the moon, where a number of companies struggle to stay on top, including the United American Republic, European Union, and Africa’s Transvaal.
Each company has its own armed guards who protect mining operations on site. Jim Hawkins has just enlisted with the UAR, and now it’s time for him to head to space with a team of his fellow soldiers. Hawkins is green; he’s never seen actual combat. He may soon learn more than he ever imagined.
Someone is out to sabotage UAR’s operations. As a Space Marine, Hawkins knows it’s his job to stop them, but can he discover the culprit before it’s too late? One of their trusted allies could be behind the attack, and Hawkins will need to grow up fast to sort this mess out.
About the Author
Joe East served four years in the US Air Force as a communications specialist and has spent over thirty-five years as a civil servant writing technical publications and teaching courses to soldiers serving in the United States Army. He lives with his wife, Joan, in Madison, Alabama.
