April 1961 was a key turning point in my relationship with Dag. We had a serious disagreement over the appropriate way to respond to the failed invasion of Cuba at the Bay of Pigs, which had turned into an embarrassment for President Kennedy and the United States. The invasion lasted from April 17 to 21, and in the aftermath, many Cubans and some Americans were executed by Fidel Castro. In its first days, I had great hopes that the invasion would be a success. I was opposed to Castro because, through his rise, I could see the possibility of Communism spreading through the whole hemisphere. When I read the newspaper accounts of the disaster, I began to weep. Dag came home to find me and, in the tradition of Christian Science, said, “Why are you crying? It’s not real.” And it was at this moment that I knew I had to go beyond Christian Science. From what I had seen in the I AM books, people could do something about world events. We could and should use the power of God at our disposal to make a difference through prayer and action. I knew that Saint Germain must know what kind of spiritual work could be done to turn back the spread of Communism and I was shocked that my husband had no interest in taking accountability for the world scene. I got up and left the apartment, ran up a couple of flights of stairs to the roof of the building, and threw my arms up into the sky. I cried out, “Saint Germain, I know you’re up there! You’ve got to come and get me now! I can’t wait any longer!” I felt the light and love go out from me, and I felt it reach its mark; I knew he was there, and I was at peace. No more than a day or two after making that fiat, I received a phone call from Dr. Whitney, telling me that the messenger Mark Prophet would be in town that evening and would deliver a lecture and a dictation. It was April 22, 1961. It seemed that, after all these years trying to find Godfré Ray King, I was finally going to hear a dictation and meet a messenger of the ascended masters. I literally ran to this meeting, I was so excited and I wanted to be on time. I sat down in that tiny little room in that old building in Boston. Just a handful of people were there. The altar was decked with fresh flowers, and a woman named Ruby Williams was sitting at the back, manning the tape recorder that was used to record the dictation and to play meditation music. I found myself sitting opposite the messenger Mark Prophet, who was seated, facing the group. I looked into his eyes, and I realized then that I had been looking for that pair of eyes all of my life. I can only describe them as a pair of eyes that had met the eyes of God. He had a profound understanding, a wisdom and a love that was extra¬ordinary. I knew that I had found the one who could open to me the door of consciousness. I had found my teacher.

From a small-town New Jersey girl to a world-renowned new age teacher, Elizabeth Clare Prophet underwent a remarkable transformation. At age twenty-four, she began taking “dictations,” or messages, from a group of saints and sages known as the ascended masters. By age forty, she was called Mother and Guru Ma by thousands of followers, and also known as a prophet (her real last name). She had also begun to be labeled a controversial cult leader. Now at the age of seventy, she publishes a memoir of her early years.
In never-before-released material from interviews, letters and diaries, she explores her spiritual quest from birth through age twenty four. Part I describes a conventional upbringing in 1950s small-town America. But, as she reveals, the roots of her spiritual quest were there from an early age, expressed in childhood in her remarkable devotion to the proto new age Christian Science. She tells how her religion helped her to cope with her father’s alcoholism and the childhood onset of epilepsy. Part II reveals her teenage ups and downs, experiments with Eastern thought and modern philosophy, and an early marriage to a fellow Christian Scientist. Finally, she describes her choice to make the radical change of leaving that marriage to follow Mark Prophet, who became her teacher and second husband.
The work is threaded with her descriptions of the presence of God that she believes overshadowed her from the moment of birth. She tells how that presence led her into a spiritual work that touched the lives of thousands. This revealing, personal journey probes the very essence of spirituality.
About the Author
Elizabeth Clare Prophet is a new age spiritual leader and author of more than fifty books which have sold more than a million copies and been translated into a dozen languages. She carried on a teaching and healing ministry for thirty-six years. She holds a degree in political science from Boston University. She began her spiritual quest in Christian Science and continued through The Summit Lighthouse, a group founded by her late husband, Mark L. Prophet, in 1958. His was one of several groups to promote the teachings of the ascended masters, a group of unseen saints and sages. Both Prophets were believed to receive messages from the ascended masters. After Mark's death in 1973, Elizabeth carried on her spiritual work through Church Universal and Triumphant, which she founded in 1975. Her lectures, sermons, and rituals are available on hundreds of audio- and videotapes. Her most popular books include "The Lost Years of Jesus" and "How to Contact Your Higher Self." She is the mother of five children and grandmother of nine. After being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 1998, she retired in 2000. She currently lives in private home care in Bozeman, Montana.
