About the Book

Lupita never lowered her standards or expectations of what her Quincinera would be like. She just modified them. When her papa lost his part-time job, it seemed that all hope was lost. After all, he had secured the job to pay for Lupita to have weight reduction surgery, and to pay for her costly Quincinera expenses.

Knowing that the event was symbolic of her step into maturity, Lupita refused to give in to despair. She found alternate solutions, gained tremendous wisdom, and still had an unbelievable celebration that energized and united a whole community. She also achieved some lasting lifestyle changes, and reached some sky-scraping goals for her life!

In the process, she learned determination, and drive, and gained a significant increase in her self-esteem.

About the Author

Shirley A. Franklin is a Reading teacher in the Dallas area. The mother of one son, she is a native of Austin, Tx. Franklin has been writing and inspiring others to write for most of her life. Many of her works are a tribute to her hard-working parents (now deceased). They nutured and fueled her desire to express things creatively from the early days of her youth. Her father especially intrigued her with his witty and creative ways of saying ordinary things, even in the last days of his life. For most of her teaching career, she has taught largely Hispanic students. This experience allowed her to come to appreciate their many cultural differences. She often heard students mention the beloved Quincinera, and has been invited to some of these family celebrations.
